Weβre excited to introduce something new here on the McConnellsburg Volunteer Fire Department Facebook page!
Each month, we will be sharing a Fire Safety Tip of the Month to help keep our community informed, prepared, and safe year-round.
For December, weβre focusing on a common but often overlooked danger: overloaded power outlets and improper use of extension cords.
π Why This Matters
Overloading outlets or using extension cords the wrong way can lead to serious hazards, including:
π₯ Electrical Fires
Too many devices plugged into one outlet or power strip can cause overheating, sparks, and potentially a fast-moving fire.
β‘ Damaged or Overheated Wiring
Extension cords are not designed for long-term or high-power use. Overloading them can break down insulation and expose live wires.
β Breaker Trips Are a Warning Sign
If your breaker keeps tripping, the circuit is overloaded. Ignoring the issue can cause dangerous heat buildup behind walls.
π₯ Fire Spread Under Rugs or Furniture
Running cords under carpets or pinching them under furniture traps heat, damages the cord, and increases fire risk.
π« Using the Wrong Cord
Indoor cords used outside, or low-amp cords powering high-watt devices (like heaters), can overheat quickly.
Stay tuned for more helpful tips throughout the month!
Together, we can keep McConnellsburg safe. β€οΈπ |
